Martin and Vinis collaboration on the seminal debut, The Return of the Durutti Column, was less a traditional recording session and more of a sonic experiment. While Vini provided the fragile, classically-influenced guitar arpeggios, Hannett acted as a sculptor, using digital delays and primitive synthesisers to suspend those notes in an otherworldly space.
 
The creative dynamic was famously fraught. Hannett would often spend days obsessing over electronic bird noises and rhythmic patterns, largely ignoring Vini until a specific sound triggered a musical response. This friction resulted in a landmark of "ambient post-punk" - a sound Vini initially hated for its lack of traditional structure, but later recognised as the identity that made the project immortal.
